Dear Parents,

I trust that you had an enjoyable Carnival weekend participating in the activities or spending a relaxing time with family. We are now in the season of Lent and I do hope that all Catholic families will use this opportunity to renew their faith and to commit to prayer, fasting and abstinence.

Over the past seven weeks your daughters took part in our co curricular activity-Projects.This culminates in an Open Day on Thursday, March 17, 2011.You are invited to attend Mass in honour of our patron saint, St. Joseph, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 8:30 a.m.and then to view the live performances and still displays from 10:30 a.m. in the school. Please note that I have applied for a school holiday on Friday, March 18, 2011 pending Ministry’s approval.

End of Term Exams

We are fast approaching the end of the term, and oral examinations have started for your daughters.Formal exams will begin on Monday 21st March, 2011 for Forms 3, 5, LVI and UVI.Report books will be distributed to all students on April 08, 2011.Absent students will receive their report books in the new term.

School reopens on April 26, 2011. ', '

Parents, I wish to emphasise that students are to report to school for 8:00 o’clock and that the school day ends at 2:30p.m. Far too often parents are signing out their children during examination time.We are a school NOT a university. Students must arrive for 8:00 o’clock and not when they perceive that the examination will start.I look forward to your full cooperation in this matter.

Graduation

A reminder to parents that Graduation Mass for Form Fives and Sixes are as follows:

Form 6:Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 5:00 pm in the school auditorium

Form 5:Tuesday, May 03, 2011 at 5:00 pm at OLPH Church.

Vacation Classes

A few teachers will be conducting classes during the Easter vacation.Letters will be sent home informing you about these classes. The tear off slip indicating your consent should be returned to the class teacher.May I remind parents that students should attend classes in school T-shirts and jeans. They should be decently attired.

Friends of SJC

The parent body has organized a seminar for parents of Forms One and Two on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 4:00pm in the school auditorium.Guest speaker is Dr. Sastri Harnarayn, orthodontist, who will speak on dental care and dental health. You are invited to this meeting and we look forward to your presence.

This group of parents has also organized a Teacher Appreciation Day and will be treating the staff to breakfast on March 24, 2011.We thank these hardworking and dedicated parents for this gesture.I would like to take this opportunity to invite all parents to be part of this dynamic group.

School uniform

I am appealing to all parents to ensure that their daughters are properly attired in the school uniform.Too many students have deviated from the prescribed uniform. Also, their shoes have become an eyesore in many cases.I look forward to your support in addressing this issue.

Life Skill Programme

We have organized a Personal Effectiveness Programme for fifth and sixth form students. The facilitator is Ms. Denyse Busby-Earle, a past student of our school.Ms. Busby-Earle is a British resident who is here in Trinidad to conduct these workshops.Your daughters have received the flyers and I urge you to seriously consider investing in this programme for your daughters. The cost is $400.00 and forms are available from the office.

On behalf of the Vice Principal and staff, I wish you a Happy Easter vacation.May the glory of the Lord’s miracle strengthen your faith and renew your hope.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the start of the academic year. A special welcome to all of our new parents and students. I hope that the students are settling in and enjoying their new school.

I do hope that you had the time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends during the vacation period.St. Joseph’s Convent has actually been a hive of activity. Significant improvements have been made to the facilities and these include: installation of storage cupboards in the auditorium for P.E. and Theatre Arts; installation of classroom partitions in the Fifth Form; repair work to all toilets and furniture; pressure washing of the school; cleaning of the water tanks and painting of the North Wing and the Administration building. In addition, the EFCL has started the electrical upgrade at our school and this job is expected to be completed by mid-October. I have requested 300 chairs and desks from the Ministry for Forms 1 and 2 but am yet to receive these.

All of the changes are very important to ensure that our students have facilities that will further enhance their educational experience. However, improved facilities are only a small area that contributes to individual outcomes. A factor of far greater impact is the staff. We have superb staff at St. Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando and the new staff joining us this year will add to the quality we already have.

Family Life and Faith Development

We encourage all parents to become involved in the spiritual development of their children. For Catholic parents (in keeping with the theme, “Catholic family: Become what you are”) a parenting programme with a faith-based component that addresses local matters such as single-parenting, fatherhood and abuse is being offered by the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission. The training period comprises three 8-hr sessions. If you are interested in becoming a Parent Trainer, kindly call Tricia Symms or Karena Chang at 672 4280/4478 or 299 1047 respectively.

An invitation is again extended to all new parents of the school to participate in a Parenting workshop which will be conducted in our school from September 18 to October 23 from 9:00am to 11:00am on Saturdays. The cost is $200.

Curriculum

Form 1 students will soon be receiving their laptops. The main goal of the E-connect and Learning Programme is to provide access to teacher preparation programmes so that teacher will be able to infuse technology into the delivery of the curriculum. You will be kept abreast as this project unfolds.

The Form Three students will be writing the NCSE examination next year.Sixty per cent of course work from Form One to Form Three contributes towards the final grade in this examination.I urge parents to be vigilant in monitoring homework, projects and assignments. These should not be taken lightly as the marks also affect your daughter’s transcripts.

Recognition Day is carded for Thursday, October 07, 2010 and Forms 3 to 6 are invited to attend.

I encourage parents to get your daughters involved in extracurricular activities.Besides building a repertoire of skills, they serve as a passport for admission to University here and abroad.

Financial Matters

We thank the Government for the funding that we receive. However, this is never enough if we are to provide the quality education that you expect from us.Your voluntary contributions and our fund-raising activities are essential for the implementation of programmes and the upkeep of our school.Your daughters will continue to benefit from our Life Skills programmes planned for the academic year. You will also be invited to participate in these sessions.

During the last academic year, the showers were installed and more students are being offered P.E.Our Home Economics department is now fully staffed with two teachers and I am happy to inform you that the course is once again being offered to the Form 4s.

I make an appeal to all parents to kindly send the voluntary contributions so that we can continue to provide the quality education that you wish for your daughters.

Parent Support

This is an invitation to all parents to join our parent support group, Friends of St. Joseph’s Convent. We meet every second Wednesday each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Library. However, this month’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010.We look forward to you volunteering your time and talent in some way in the service of the school.I also invite you to peruse the school’s website, www.sjcsf.org to stay abreast of what is happening in the school.

Conclusion

I shall be meeting with parents of each year group in the upcoming weeks.A letter will be sent to you in due course.

Before I outline the calendar of events and present the external examination results, I wish to thank you most sincerely for your continued support as we work together in the interest of your daughters. We have had some excellent results and I am sure you will join me in congratulating all our students on their success. You will agree with me that a school works at its best when parents are involved in their children’s learning and development.I speak on behalf of all staff and the Board when I say we look forward to working with you in striving to provide the best Catholic education for your child.

Yours sincerely,

Forms 2April 26-28, 2010

Forms 4May 03-06, 2010

Co curricular Activities

Our school participated in several activities last term.I invite you to peruse the school’s

website, www.sjcsf.org, where you can read the success stories.I warmly congratulate the students and their teachers for their excellent effort.

Parents’ Day

Form 1s – May 04, 2010

Form 4s – May 18, 2010

I would like to use this opportunity to encourage parents to be very vigilant when it comes to the supervision of your daughters.Research has shown that there’s a high level of success for children whose parents are actively involved in their work.Whether children do homework at home, complete it in after school programmes or work on it during the school day, homework can be a powerful tool for:

·letting parents and other adults know what the child is learning

·giving children and parents a reason to talk about what''s going on at school

·giving teachers an opportunity to hear from parents about children''s learning.

There are too many cases where students do their homework in a rushed manner on arrival at school. In addition, a fair amount of copying takes place and the objective of giving the homework is defeated.

I look forward to an improvement in this area.

The academic year is fast coming to a close and I urge all parents to begin thinking about constructive ways in which your daughters can spend the vacation time having fun while preparing for examinations or building a repertoire of skills.

On behalf of the school community, I wish to thank you for your tremendous support and may God bless us all!!

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents,

We have had an exciting term so far. I cannot believe that in less than one month, school will be closed for the Christmas vacation. During this term your daughters have had to balance their academic work with many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. How well they have done this will be reflected in their end of term performance.

Recognition Day

This function was held on Thursday, October 15, 2009.It was well attended and we were happy to see so many parents in the audience. This year we had an increase in prizes and this is a reflection of the excellent performance of our girls at external examinations and co-curricular activities. We wish to thank all the parents who continue to support us as well as our sponsors who on a yearly basis contribute magnanimously to this event.

Garden Party

As usual, Garden party was a huge success. Our girls went out of their way to ensure that their stalls were tastefully decorated and they worked hard.Once again my sincerest thanks to you parents for responding to your daughter’s urgent needs where Garden party was concerned.Your efforts for pre-Garden party sales did not go unnoticed. ', '

Friends of SJC

As you may know, the annual Parang Dinner and Dance takes place at Prive and the price of the ticket is $200.00.Tickets are available from any member of Friends of SJC.The Winchester Parang group will be supplying music as well as a surprise entertainer who will serenade us at dinner.I look forward to meeting all of you at Prive.

Inter-house Song and Dance Competition

This year our students will showcase their talent on Thursday, December 10, 2009 in a grand concert, “It’s Christmas”at 5:00 p.m.Houses will be performing in four categories:

·Classical

·Parang

·Dance

·Solo instrumentalist

A technical rehearsal will take place during the day and school will be dismissed at 1:00 pm to facilitate the night concert which starts at 5:00 pm.

Tickets are priced at $25.00 and refreshments will be on sale.I urge you to come out and support your daughters and their respective Houses.

Extra-curricular Activities

We had our first taste of success when the Under 20 Volleyball team won all their matches. They are now the current South Zone champions and they will advance to the National Championships. The Under 16 team performed very well and they will compete for third place in the South Zone Division.

The Swim Team must be congratulated for their outstanding success at the Tidal Wave Aquatics Competition. Our swimmers broke records and we received trophies for the Most Improved School and the Best South School.

Students participated in the Secondary Schools Sanskritik Sangam. They placed 2nd in the Instrument Senior category; 1st and 2nd in the Junior category and 4th in the Indian Folk Dance.

Co-curricular Activities

The school participated in SANFEST this year in the Art category. We received 7 Distinctions, 13 Merits and 1 UNESCO Jazz Award.

The Sc rabble Club also celebrated this term as five students qualified for the National Schools’ Scrabble Finals. No prizes were won but this year we had the largest number of students representing the school in the finals.

Poetry Day was celebrated on October 15th and the English Department launched a poetry writing competition. Many students participated and quite a number of sterling submissions were received. We would like to thank RBTT Financial, NGC, BGTT, Unit Trust, Wazir’s Drugs and Daphne Bartlett who generously supported this endeavour.

Winners in the Senior Category were Gabrielle Alexander, Danielle Stewart and Ornella Daly who won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes respectively.

Winners in the Junior category were Nyoka Kirton, Celeste Reece and Ariel Richardson who also won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes respectively.Special prizes donated by the Principal were awarded to Michelle Roopnarine and Alleya Baksh.

This year our school participated in two Junior Achievement (JA) competitions for the first time.Sixth Form students were trained to act as managers and CEO’s of their own virtual banks and companies. The team that took part in the Bank in action competition placed first in the national finals and won the chance to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the regional finals in Peru. The team for the Titan competition made it to the national semi-finals.

End of Term Examination

Some practical exams have already started but End of Term examination officially starts on Monday, November 23, 2009 and ends on Friday, December 04, 2009.Lower Six and Upper Six have no formal end of term examination but will be taught until Friday 04, 2009.

Students are expected to be in school from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.We are asking parents to desist from taking students out of school during the day especially during the exam period. All students will receive their report books on Friday, December 11, 2009.Only students who attend school on this day in full uniform will receive their report books.Report books will NOT be distributed during the vacation period.School will be dismissed at 12:15 pm on December 11, 2009.

SJC Choir

All students are encouraged to audition for the Junior and Senior Choirs.I know in the past many of our girls have sung in the Pres-Con choir and the Pres. Mixed Choir. While we applaud the students’ initiative, it is burdensome to adjust the exam timetable or to give exams outside the stipulated time in order to accommodate this activity.Ms. Dowrich, our Music teacher, and I have discussed this matter.Only Form Five and Form Six students will be accommodated for the Pres- Con choir. We cannot accommodate students who belong to the Pres. Mixed Choir. Parents please take note as this will have an impact when the Music Festival season opens next year.

While our school will always make concessions for students representing the school or the country, this does not include students taking early leave for the purpose of vacation.Parents kindly desist from this practice.

As we enter the season of Christmas, it is our custom to include you in a Novena of Masses offered at Mt. St. Benedict.I take this opportunity on behalf of our Vice Principal to wish you and your family a happy and holy Christmas.May the spirit of Christmas remain with us throughout the coming year.

Sincerely,

Dinna M. Bainey

Dear Parents,

I trust that your daughters had a good vacation and hope that the preparation for school was marked with a high degree of enthusiasm in your respective homes. A special welcome to the Form 1 parents who are beginning an association with Catholic education.

Faith Development

We encourage our Catholic parents to get actively involved in the spiritual development of your daughters. A new Religious Education curriculum has been implemented. We look forward to working with you to deliver a distinctive Catholic education.

Curriculum

Your daughter''s presence at this school indicates a high level of academic ability. We have a very qualified and competent staff committed to providing quality education for your daughters. This is no easy task and the challenges are many. So we look forward to your support as we seek a partnership with you in order to realize this goal. ', '

The Form Three students will be writing the NCSE examination next year. Sixty per cent of course work from Form One to Form Three contributes towards the final grade in this examination. I urge parents to be vigilant in monitoring homework, projects and assignments. These should not be taken lightly as the marks also affect your daughter''s transcripts.

Recognition Day is carded for Thursday, October 15, 2009 and Forms 3 to 6 are invited to attend.

I encourage parents to get your daughters involved in extracurricular activities. Besides building a repertoire of skills it serves as a passport for admission to Universities here and abroad.

Financial Matters

We thank the Government for the funding that we receive. However, this is never enough if we are to provide the quality education that you expect from us. Your voluntary contributions and our fund raising activities are essential to implement programmes and to upkeep our school. Your daughters will continue to benefit from our Life Skills programmes planned for the academic year. You will also be invited to participate in these sessions.

I wish to thank all those parents who responded to my call for donations towards the painting of the school. This was not as generous as I had expected. As the majority of the contributions came from Form 1 and 2 parents, the West Wing was painted. All classrooms, labs, some specialist rooms and the toilets were also painted. I look forward to the contribution towards this project from parents of Forms 3 to 6, so that our entire school can receive the much needed facelift.

Maintaining and sustaining a high quality learning environment is no easy task. You will agree that refurbishment will have a strong impact on school morale, parental choice and community pride. I look forward to your continued support and I wish to assure you of continued and concerted efforts to seek the necessary government assistance for school improvements and new facilities.

One of the projects we must undertake quickly is the provision of showers for our students. This is an urgent project as we expect a P.E. teacher to report for duty soon. I had requested the installation of the showers as a holiday project from EFCL but our school was not chosen for vacation works. In fact, I was told that the Ministry will not be handling new projects.

Parent Support

This is an invitation to all parents to join our parent support group, Friends of St. Joseph''s Convent. We meet every second Wednesday in the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Library. However, the meeting this month will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. We look forward to you volunteering your time and talent in some way in the service of the school.

Conclusion

I shall be meeting with parents of each year group in the upcoming weeks. A letter will be sent to you in due course.

Before I outline the calendar of events and present the external examination results, I wish to thank you most sincerely for your continued support as we work together in the interest of your daughters. A school works at its best when parents are involved in their children''s learning and development.

I speak on behalf of all staff and the Board when I say we look forward to working with you in striving to provide the best Catholic education for your child.

Yours sincerely,

Dinna M. Bainey

Dear Parents,

In this season of Lent, we pray for God''s guidance and strength as we commit ourselves to renewing our faith.

As you know, we celebrated Carnival this year by showcasing the talent of your daughters through the Inter-house Competition. This was an excellent display of artistry, and showmanship. Our Captains and Vice Captains learnt very valuable lessons about leadership, responsibility and team effort.

Open Day was held on March 19, 2009 and I wish to thank all parents who took time off from their busy schedules to attend Mass and to view the live and still displays. I am sure that you were impressed by your daughter''s talent and the skills learnt over the seven weeks of Projects.

You were informed by letters about the PISA testing and the CXC pretests which involved the Fifth and Sixth Form students. These took place earlier this month.

Mrs. Khan attended this schoo, then returned to teach at her Alma Mater for thirty four years. She also acted as Vice Principal from 2004 to 2008.

In February, we welcomed Mrs. Jennifer Manwaring, as our new Vice Principal to our school. Mrs. Manwaring assumed duties on February 12, 2009.

Vacation classes

A few teachers will be conducting classes during the Easter vacation. Letters were sent home informing you about these classes. The tear off slip indicating your consent should be returned to the class teacher. Parents, I urge you to be extra vigilant about your daughters'' whereabouts. May I advise that you refrain from sending them on errands especially on High Street which is no longer a safe zone. We can account for them between the official school hours.

On behalf of the Vice Principal and staff, I wish you an enjoyable Easter vacation with your family. May you experience the power and the glory of the resurrected Christ and may God transform our lives by giving us a new perspective and dynamic for living.

Yours sincerely,

Dinna M. Bainey

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year to you! I trust that you found time amidst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season to spend quality time with your daughters and to learn about their expectations.

I wish to thank all parents for the many ways in which you continue to contribute to the life of the school. On behalf of the staff and the Cluny Board, I thank you for your generosity towards the Benefit Concert for our past Principal, Sr. Phyllis Wharfe; for the contributions made to the raffle in aid of the Retreat Centre in Tobago and for your support towards our first Parang Lime, all of which were very successful.

Staffing

Ms. Karen Beekee (Mathematics) and Ms. Nadia Khan (Sociology) have resigned and we thank them for their service to our school. We welcome on staff Ms. Marcella Boatswain, History and Social Studies teacher. Also, I have arranged for a teacher from another school to tutor the Lower Six Sociology students. Our real challenge continues to be finding a suitable replacement for the Mathematics post.

School Facilities

I am pleased to inform you that the much needed windows for the Sixth Form floor have been received. These should be installed this term along with the air-condition units.

I have made several requests to the Ministry to obtain furniture for the classrooms. To date, I have received no positive response. I will continue to pursue this cause as many of our students are sitting at broken desks.

Our classrooms also need repainting. We are inviting parents or a group of parents from each class to adopt a classroom, to sponsor the paint and provide the labour, so our girls can sit in an environment that will be conducive to learning. I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Homework

The purpose of homework is two-fold: to reinforce what the girls have learned in class, and to teach responsibility. A student who has done her homework is prepared and in class, she will hear explanations of what she has had trouble with at home. A student who has not done her homework loses twice-both in learning through reinforcement, and in listening to explanations in class. This is a special appeal to all parents to monitor their daughters'' homework and to help them develop good work habits for future years.

Synod 2009

Many of our Catholic parents are aware that this event is taking place at the moment. I appeal to parents to engage your daughters, and be engaged, in their daily worship. They should also get involved in the various youth groups in the parish to which they belong. As parents, we too need to get involved and lead by example. The moral fibre of our society is daily being eroded and the Church is trying to put programmes in place to regenerate moral and spiritual values in society and these start in the homes and schools.

To our non Catholic parents, we ask that you encourage your daughters to attend your place of worship and get involved in doing good service for their community.

Our girls need to know there will be many struggles with which they will have to cope throughout life. They must also recognize that the manner in which they cope with these struggles will factor into their personal development and spiritual growth.

May God continue to bless us all as I wish you Good Parenting!!

Yours sincerely,

Dinna M. Bainey

Dear Parents,

Although the year is over one month old, I still want to wish you a Happy New Year and all God’s blessings.

I thank you for your tremendous support of the Christmas Song & Dance. Without it, the concert would not have been the resounding success that it was.I also take this opportunity to thank my staff for their indefatigable efforts in coordinating these events. Your daughters have shown their capacity to lead and to work with their peers and those in authority. The DVD is available and I look forward to your contribution.

I take this opportunity to remind parents to be extremely cautious during the Carnival season. It is so important to know about the whereabouts of your daughters as danger always seems to be lurking. The Church and the school have no problem with the celebration of Carnival. We do have a problem with ‘how’ it is celebrated.I assure you that we will continue to impress upon our young ladies the importance of good deportment while enjoying themselves.

The Season of Lent is close and it is an important period in the Church calendar for reflection, soul-searching, repentance and

taking stock. I therefore encourage parents and students to rededicate themselves to the faith in preparation for the celebration of Easter.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents,

As you know the academic year ends on July 03, 2009 and many of you have already planned your vacation. Your daughters would have a fair amount of free time and you are faced with the formidable task of keeping them occupied. I urge you to sit with your daughters and schedule how they should spend this time in a productive manner. This is the opportunity for them to get involved in their community and to learn new skills. It is important that you know about your child''s daily activities, especially their choice of entertainment.

This academic year has been extremely challenging. We will continue to do what it takes to provide our girls with the best possible education. In my last letter to you, I had asked parents for a contribution towards the painting of classrooms. To date the response has not been what I expected. I received donations from the Form 1 parents. Many parents complain that they do not get letters from school. I wish to assure you that these are sent via your daughters. You can keep yourselves abreast with what is happening in school by visiting our website, www.sjcsf.org. So I look forward to receiving contributions for the painting project before school closes in July. Kindly place your contribution in an envelope clearly marked "PAINT PROJECT."

The external examinations will be completed on June 12, 2009 the NCSE examinations have started for Form Three. Form 3 students will be examined at the end of term in the subjects that are not written at the NCSE. All students must attend school from June 29, 2009 to July 03, 2009. End of term examinations start on Monday, June 15, 2009 and end on Friday June 26, 2009. School will be dismissed at the usual time, 2:30 p.m. We expect all students to attend school daily, and to remain in school for the duration of the session. I do not expect to see parents frequenting the office to sign out children as this disturbs the office routine. Under no circumstances would students be allowed to leave school unless their parent(s) or guardian whose signatures are on file is here to sign them out. Where there is a valid excuse for absence, a written excuse is required and in the case of prolonged illness (three days or more), a medical certificate must be submitted.

I wish to inform parents that the school day starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Students are often late due to the tardiness of parents. May I remind parents that the irregularity and unpunctuality records are reflected in your daughter''s transcript. Also, during exam time, students are to arrive for 8:00 a.m. even if an examination might start later. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, an examination may have to start earlier and if your daughter is not present, no allowances will be made for her to write the examination.

Parents are discouraged to make travel plans during exam time. No allowances can be made for your daughter to write examinations outside the scheduled time unless she is representing the country abroad.

A Professional day is planned for staff on Monday, June 08, 2009 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Your daughters will have half day pending approval from the Ministry of Education.

There will be structured activities during the final week of the term. The following have been arranged:

1. Monday, June 29, 2009 - Wednesday, July 01, 2009-05-31

- VAPA Department - Cultural activities

2. Thursday July 02, 2009

- SEA registration, School Outings

3. Friday July 07, 2009

- Class lunch

Distribution of Reports and dismissal at 1:00 p.m.

I take this opportunity to thank you for your support during this academic year. To those parents who continue to give of their time and talent may God richly reward you. Please make plans for wholesome family time during the long holidays. You may also want to impress upon your daughters the importance of obeying rules at home and at school as this will inevitably impact on every aspect of their socialisation and will make them become better citizens.

Enjoy the vacation with your daughters and I look forward to our continued collaboration in the year ahead.

With every good wish,

Dinna M. Bainey
